This coffee comes from the Ruhango district, a southern province in Mbuye, Rwanda. Sourced through our partners at Langdon Coffee Merchants, the Gisanga Washing Station has a focus on training women farmers in best agricultural practices from seedling preparation to planting and harvesting.

Alongside this, they also focus on supporting the local youth population. Sadly in Mbuye, the young are not interested in farming and have their sights set on leaving rural areas. Tropic Coffee stepped in knowing that for a sustainable coffee industry, the youth need incentives to take on their family coffee fields. They understand their quest for better lives and so she works with them to help them understand that coffee “done well” with better practices and value add can be profitable.

This Washed coffee is grown at between 1650 and 1800 metres above sea level and is 100% Red Bourbon varietal. The fully washed processing method uses natural spring water known as “Theresa’s Natural Spring”, an old name from the 1980’s when the Theresa family lived in the village and used this water for washing coffee for their home processing method.

Once the coffee cherries arrive at the washing station, they are intensively hand sorted and floated to make sure that only the highest quality cherries are processed. The coffee is pulped in the evening on the same day of delivery using a mechanical pulper that separates coffee beans in different grades. After pulping, the coffee is fermented for 10 to 16 hours in open tanks and graded in the morning using a floatation system in a channel of clean water.

This is one of two lots from the Gisanga Washing Station that we're excited to highlight and we think you'll love it's sweet & creamy character reminiscent of Strawberry Cheesecake & Nougat.
