Coffee Origin:

Bujumbura Rural, Burundi

Burundi is among the smallest coffee-producing countries in East Africa, with a population of 10.5 million that is endowed with ideal conditions for coffee production: elevations of 1500 - 2000 m, Arabica Bourbon coffee trees, abundant rainfall, and approximately 800,000 families
who cultivate an average of 150-200 coffee trees per farm. Arabica coffee now represents virtually 100% of Burundi’s national production and the bourbon variety grown at high elevations in Burundi is characteristically “sweet with bright acidity, big body, floral, citrus and spiced with wild notes.” Over the past 25 years, coffee production in Burundi has averaged 26,700 tons per year.

Coffee Process:

Natural

The ripe and red cherries are collected after 6 hours of harvest. After this they are put on raised drying beds for 30-35 days, being turned over regularly and sorted through to further remove defects. The dry cherries are taken off at 10-11% of moisture content

Dry Parchment/cherry is transported to the miller and is milled to get graded by size and density. After milling the Green beans are sorted to remove some remaining defects, after which the coffee is assessed by the Quality Lab to finally put into Grainpro and sacks for Quality preservation before it is shipped.

Coffee Producer:

Migoti Coffee

The farmers that contributed to this lot are: Stany Nyandwi, Limedy Mvuyekure, Speciose Ntahondabasigiye, Gaspard Nahimana, Clespin Ntahondi, Salvator Butoyi, Joseph Bampfuyeko.

We buy Burundi coffee from Migoti annually, and are never disappointed! Omwani has been in partnership with Burundi-based Migoti Coffee Company and their processing stations to source some of the best coffee across all of Burundi. Together they have purchased cherries directly from farmers dispersed across the mountains overlooking Lake Tanganyika to be processed back at the Migoti Hill washing station.

Omwani and Migoti have been working together since 2020 and since then we have imported around 80 tonnes and supported thousands of farmers.
